When do I replace my gutters?

Are your gutters in good shape? If your gutters aren’t up to scratch, you could be damaging your house. Bad gutters will erode dirt and cause issues with foundations, basements and other parts of the home. Your gutters matter a lot for your house’s structural integrity.

Your gutters are also an integral part of the roofing system that keeps your house safe from water. Roofs are more than just shingles—they’re a whole system that works together. If you have gutter problems, you’re going to have bigger problems soon.

You should always replace your gutters when you replace your roof. But there are other things you can check for when you should replace them, too.

How to diagnose gutter problems

If you have ice that builds up in the gutters, the straps that hold them on can stretch to the point where the gutter doesn’t hold up. That means water may pour down over the front of the gutter.

You should check your gutters a couple of times a year, particularly when it’s raining. Go outside when it’s raining and watch the gutter—if you see water pouring over the front, it’s a surefire sign that your gutter straps have stretched. Those low spots make it easy for water to erode the foundation and get into areas it shouldn’t go.

Sometimes water may run over the edge because the gutter isn’t big enough. If you have 5-inch gutters, it may be worth switching to 6-inch gutters. Water volume can contribute to erosion problems just as much as stretching can.

Occasionally there are two different sizes of gutters on a house, but it’s rare. Most of the time it’s all the same size, either five or six inch. We prefer to install the larger gutters when we do our installs because they tend to handle higher water volumes better.

Compare the gutter line to your shingle line and see what the difference is. That’s the true test.

Keeping your gutters clear

There’s always a chance that your gutters are overflowing because they’re full, too. Stay on top of clearing them out. If you don’t, they can sag and spill water.
