Oklahoma tends to have a pretty high turnover on roof shingles. Our weather isn’t conducive to longevity. But you might be wondering—just when should I replace my roof? Is there a regular interval?
Signs of roof damage
There’s no specific interval you should use to calculate when your roof needs to be replaced, but there are some telltale signs you can be on the lookout for.
Most of the time you should enlist a trained professional to make a determination, but there are a few things you can do yourself. First, keep an eye out for the granules on your shingles on the ground. If you see those granules at the bottom of your downspout or around the gutter, you probably have a problem with your roof.
If you see shingles in your yard, that’s another telltale sign. The wind shouldn’t be taking shingles off your roof, and if it is, that’s a surefire sign that something’s gone wrong.
Make sure you take a walk around your yard after a storm comes through. If you see either of those signs, you need to call a professional.
If you call a professional, they can get up on the roof and make some more specific determinations. Make sure you call someone who’s Haag certified. They should have a badge they can show that indicates that they’re able to tell what’s wrong with your roof.
Haag Engineering offers this certification as part of its training, and it has stringent standards. It requires recertification every year and every five years you have to go back to the classroom to learn the newest aspects of roofing.
Haag certifies the individual, not the company. Ask the company if they have someone Haag-certified on the payroll. If not, look for someone who does.
A professional inspector will climb up on the roof and check what’s wrong. They’ll check more directly for granular damage, exposed asphalt, broken shingles or impact damage and tell you whether your roof needs work.
If you’ve had a storm come through and you think the roof might have taken some damage, it’s a great time to call an inspector. When other people in your neighborhood are getting their roofs done you should check as well, because often if one roof in the area is bad many others are too.
Call Village Roofing if you think your roof might need an inspection. We have Haag-certified inspectors who can come out and check your roof, and we have over 25 years of experience identifying problems and fixing roofs. We’ll make your roof like new again.
